Paravel
Geography and History
Paravel is a large proud nation to the North of the continent.Historically it has been a formidable presence in the world, holding its own against many opponents through the centuries. In particularly it has had a long standing antipathy towards Albion. Sandwiched between Tartaria and Frisia, it demonstrated its military and political strength by remaining a neutral barrier between the two allied country during the late part of the 11th century. Although predominantly Pureblood in composition, the population has pockets of Elves and Dwarves who enjoy the same status as humans. Greenskins are permitted to enter the country and even hold rank and status, although they are not treated with much respect.
Politics and Government
The hereditary Emperor and his court of nobles wield all the power and the majority of the wealth in Paravel. Divided into a large number of Baronies and Provinces, it is a predominantly a pastoral fuedal society. Each surf, artisan, and tradesman pays fealty and tithe to their ruling Noble family. Lesser Nobles, Gentry, Landed Scholars and Magicians are also expected to supplicate themselves to an extent to the ruling family of a region. Each Lord or Lady is left to govern their own land as they see fit, and enforce the law of the land as they wish through sheriffs, bailiffs and ess reputable means. They also preside over through county courts and levels taxes to suit themselves.
Tradition and Culture
Paravelian Nobility are noted for their distinctive sense of morality and style. Academic and magical scholarship are seen as being one of the defining marks of good breeding, and thus there are a few high born who do not have extensive education and magical training. In this, and in many other aspects of culture, there is no gender distinction made. All circles of magic are accepted within the Paravelian court, although Necromancy is particularly favoured as a way of ensuring the purity and continuity of the bloodline through generations. As such, Necromancy and Undeath are not frowned upon as they are in many other cultures. In fact they are so common place among the highest social ranks that they draw no comment at all. In addition to their penchant for variable states of mortality, the Paravelian nobility have a reputation for enjoying the best in life. Their fascination with fine cuisine and expensive couture in widely recorded and has been previously refered to as foppishness by outsiders.
