From Aberddu Wiki
In the world of Urdd having a religion, following a God, isn’t a leap of faith, as the Gods can be, and have been, fairly active on this physical plain. Their existence is an established fact - brought home by the magical powers they grant to their priests, or clerics. To follow a God you don’t have to dedicate yourself to them and become a cleric, the Gods welcome as many followers as they can get - there is some speculation among the learned that the Gods derive their power from the number of people who worship them. It is not compulsory that a person follow a God, and indeed a few people don’t, but most people in the world do have a particular God that they look to and most agree with. There is even a following of the All Gods, where each and every God is worshipped and honoured without preference.
Each of the Gods is more of a pantheon than a singular entity, as different aspects of the God demand worship differently. People can either follow the God as a whole, or choose to follow a particular aspect of that God, just as you can get clerics of the whole or of an aspect. Each aspect, while still following the main principals of the whole, has their own idiosyncrasies and opinions, and these are reflected by their followers.
Recent events, commonly referred to as " the God War", have caused a few people to turn around and say that they don’t trust any of the Gods. During the God War the Gods actually came down to this plain of existence, away from their own plains, and made war upon each other and each other’s followers, causing huge armies to be mustered and to do battle upon one another. A few of the Gods were killed in this war: the Trickster God was killed; the God of the Aesthetics, the God of Knowledge and the God of the Enigmas were consumed by the God of Keesoth; and the Celestial Flame was seen to perish after the Gods were banned from traversing into and out of our physical plain. The Clerics of the Dead Gods still retain their power, but they cannot imbue any new followers with the power that would make them into a cleric of their God.
The God War only ended when the Aberddu Adventures Guild performed a ritual to all of the Gods, with all of the ancient sacred items of each God, to ask them to stop. It is not certain exactly what happened at the ritual, although it is certain that some of the Gods did indeed put in an appearance, and there are rumours to the effect that there may be a new Power in Urdd now. In the end Krynok - the purported Father of the Gods - removed all of the Gods off our plain and prevented them from coming back, as the Warring of the Gods was destroying the very fabric of our world. The Celestial Flame was trapped upon our plain after this, and died as a result of this entrapment. Another development of this time was the merging of the Gods Amroth and Life to defend themselves from the growing strength of Keesoth. The Gods are now commonly split up into two groups, the good or "Light" Gods, and the bad or "Dark" Gods, although the division is very biased, and mainly put about by the followers of the "Light" Gods - as not all the Gods, let alone all of the followers of those Gods classed as "Dark" are really evil.
Despite all this, the Gods are pretty much in balance, each God having an opposite in another God. The easiest way to present the Gods is with their opposite, the balancing force that keeps them in line. Some of the Gods feel an unreasoning animosity towards their opposite - this is what caused the God war, which has in fact been going on for millennia but only recently spilled over to encompass this plain. Other Gods feel that they can work with their opposite, as they recognise that without their opposite they themselves would not have much meaning.
All the gods have symbols that relate to them, sometimes differing for differing aspects. For more information, see Symbology
