The Cataclysm.

Some 1100 years ago the world was devestated by the Great Cataclysm. Nations fell and fire rained down from the heavens, forever changing the face of the world.

Some say it was caused by a great war between vastly powerful nations, or perhaps even that the Gods grew angered with mankind and decided to punish them. No one is sure. History of Aberddu

NOTE: this is the history as we presently know it, and may not always be completely correct. As the saying goes “the conqueror writes the history” – and then some clever dick of a writer goes and changes it all for a play to please the queen. The new additions to the history list are those as they were in the ORIGINAL rule book. Luckily saved by Phil (as he was meant to be doing the updated history), and found amoungst his one hundred and one backups.

407 BC

First settlement by Purebloods called Aberddu, a small fishing village on the north shore of the river Ddu. This is part of the kingdom of Barclaria, One of the ‘middle kingdoms’. Elves remain on the wooded hills of the south shore.

The Cataclysm strikes the world, sea levels change, and the Ddu estuary becomes wider. The original village disappears under the waves, the Elven Mounds on the south shore become islands within the mouth of the river. The newly formed delta reaches several miles inland.

2AC

Last of the Elves leave the south shore settlements, after opening the flood gates which have kept the rising waters of the River Ddu out of their settlements. The lands are flooded and disappear beneath the waves. Several elven bodies wash up on the shores, all have drowned. Legends begin of the drowned kingdom of the Elves.

They hold Aberddu for three weeks, until King Gerald of Albion sends an army of his own to take back the region. 12,000 die in the battle of Aberddu Plain. Johan disappears brining the battle to an end. A further 124 are executed for their part in the fight for Barclarian independence. Celebrations for five hundreds years of Albion rule cancelled in Aberddu. Garrison size tripled and a further two warships are added to the local ‘defences’. 543AC

Frysian invasion of Aberddu. King Gerald of Albion launches an army immediately and in the June the ‘Siege of Aberddu’ begins.

543AC

February- The siege of Aberddu ends as a Frisian army lands behind the Albion army and take of the south shore and supply lines. The Albion army surrenders to Lord Cutus, General of the Frisian armies. Aberddu and as far south as the Albion Way Pass become territory of Frisia. Rumours spread of Paravalian backing of Frisian ‘invasion’. Unofficial truce begins.

546AC

Gerald of Albion dies, aged 68 years. Taraduth the Sword, the Blood Prince crowned king.

547AC

Taraduth leads armies against Frisia. One section goes through the Albion Way Pass and retakes the lands and town of Aberddu. 3,000 Frisians and ‘collaborators’ executed on the plains north of Aberddu in sight of the retreating Frisian army. Several other sections land from the sea behind the retreating army and the Massacare of Pass Fort occurs. 15,000 Frisian troops are massacred in the battle. A further 4,000camp-followers are slaughtered. The heads of all the dead Frisians are collected and sent to the Frisian Capital with a troll caravan. It takes the caravan four hours to pass through the gates from beginning to end. At the sight of all the dead, the populace revolt against the monarchy. Frisia collapses into anarchy and local Warlords take control of different regions.

549AC

King Taraduth leads army into southern Frisia. Many local Warlords join him, but some start to form into ‘resistance’. Paravel ‘quietly’ take over parts of Northern and Eastern Frisia leaving local warlords as ‘governors’ of the newly formed states.

551AC

Taraduth becomes ill – allegedly poisoned. Expansion into Frisia is halted.

553AC

697AC

October: Tartar army disband and return to Tartarian lands with the first frosts of winter. Separate into old clans and start to worship old totems. No explanation available as to why this happens as the army had practically conquered the whole of Albion and Southern Paraval and Frisia. Many Tartarians killed in revenge attacks.

698AC

Work starts on rebuilding of Aberddu. City walls increased in height and width. Summer Palace given separate wall. Garrison moved into the new Palace grounds and separate harbour and quay built within Palace walls.

700AC

767AC

Messengers sent out by Albion Couriers across the known world for competitors to enter “The Warrior of the Decade Competition” to be held in Auborn in 770AC.

770AC

“Warrior of the Decade” Competition held in Auborn, with Dowager Queen Felitia as the judge. Over 2,500 warriors die in the first rounds even though it is only to be fought with wooden weapons. 127 are expelled for using Elven Wood weapons, which actually break the stone pillar they are tested against. After two months of competing, the champion is Wilbur Pollocks of Neckard. Two days of searching reveal Neckard on a map of the known world as a pin-point in the Middle Kingdoms. The entire kingdom consists of a pig farm in a small wood (2 miles across and 3 miles long), a two room house with lean-to barn and a wooden palisade to keep the pigs in at night, and Creamcup the farmer’s daughter, who Wilbur intends to marry.

Wilbur asked to be Queen Felitia’s Champion, turns it down as Gertrude, his favourite sow, is due to give birth any day and he has to return home to Neckard. Gertrude gives birth to a litter of 14 piglets, largest known litter in Neckard and surrounding kingdoms. All 14 survive and become the founders of the Royal Neckard Line of pigs. Renowned throughout the known world as the best ‘porkers’. Neckard becomes site of pilgrimage for warriors and pig loversalike.

784AC

Chrysalla of the Wood Elves acts as an envoy for Elven Nations with the humans in the Elven Wood. Humans ambush her and leave her for dead. Chrysalla disappears believe dead. Humans claim they were all ambushed by Nachwerten and Chrysalla was carried off. Wood Elves of Elven Wood go to war with Nachwerten of Dark Elf Caverns.

786AC

The Cloud Elves of the Elven Hills join the Wood Elves of the Elven Wood in the war against Nachwerten. This is due to a Cloud Elf village being attacked and all inhabitants murdered, after being tortured. The attackers left behind some of their own dead, which were two Nachwerten in disguise as humans from southern Arabi. Humans remain neutral and do not enter Elven War.

789AC

The Fire Elves of Southern Nortrol have several of their villages attacked and inhabitants slaughtered. The other ‘races’ deny any association with attacks, including the Nachwerten. Finally after two months of attacks with no witnesses alive, a Fire-elf mage manages to escape an attack by plunging into the flames of a lava flow as it enters the sea. He describes the attackers as being humans in different types of armour, but all wearing the same red tabards and cloaks with the same shield design. Every one of the attackers was heard to be screaming “Death to all Elves”, almost like a chant and they fought with the ferocity of fanatics.

The Fire Elves of Nortrol meet with the Council of Three, which is the ruling Elders of the Human races of Nortrol. The Council show it is non of the Humans of Nortrol who carried out the attacks. It remains a mystery who the attackers are and suspicion falls again to the Nachwerten and the survivors story being a trick to lure suspicion away from them. The Nortrol Fire Elves decree that any Nachwerten seen on the lands is an open target and has no rights, including those to life.

782AC

The wars between the Nachwerten and other Major Elven races continues with occasional skirmishes and sneak attacks. The Nachwerten close all main routes into their caverns, no other races are allowed into their cities of Darkness. Official trade ceases. The Nachwerten in other towns and cities disappear during the night, sometimes taking their belongings, sometimes not. The prices in precious gems and snuff made from Black Elf Lichen go up in Aberddu markets.

783AC

Rumours of a new war-lord conquering several of the smaller war-lords territories in ‘Frisia’ reach Aberddu. All the conquered territories had non-human war-lords, who were slaughtered along with all the non-humans in their forces. The humans are offered their lives to serve with the new War-lord.

784-787AC

The majority of territories in ‘Frisia’ fall to the new War-lord and his human forces, rumours start about evil magics and such things as ‘raw iron’ weapons being used.

789AC

The whole of ‘Frisia’, bar the Southern Alliance has fallen to the Human army. Albion sends an army through The Pass to strengthen the garrisons of the Southern Alliance. The Albion army is ambushed and all non-humans are slaughtered, the surviving humans are asked for their surrender and allegiance to the War-lord and his Human army. Many men give their allegiance, but the majority choose death before dishonour. The Southern Alliance falls and for the first time in two and a half centuries the whole of Frisia is again held under one ruler.

790AC

Frisia closes all their borders, and the bodies of non-humans are crucified and let to rot all along the borders. Some refugees escape with tales of horror and mass slaughter of non-humans. Rumours of a religious cult being the true power behind the War-lord reach the other lands. The ‘Frisian army’ are equipped with red cloaks and tabards.

791AC

An army of mainly non-humans musters upon the plains of Pass Fort in Albion, under the leadership of the Cloud Elf, Belandrus. They march on Frisia to demand justice for the slaughter of the non-humans. There is also suspicion of who the attackers on elven settlements were. Some of the army are refugees ‘going home’ to reclaim their lands. Belandrus’ army numbers 12,000 non-humans and 3,000 humans. Upon reaching the new Frisian border the army stops and spreads out in a line almost a mile in length. The border guards are seen to ride away into Frisia, and stop on the hills overlooking the wide valley down from Pass Fort. No Frisian army appears to challenge Belandrus’ army and they advance across the border with it’s gruesome markers of crucified creatures. The whole line cross the border together and every single non-human collapses to the ground in intense agony. Many later recall that they had visions of being tortured and finally crucified in a mass ceremony, led by a robed figures. However, the humans of the army are suddenly possessed with an intense hatred of the ‘weakling, thieving, dirty non-humans’ and turn their weapons upon their fellows and begin to kill any non-humans within striking distance. Many struggle back to the Albion side of the border and the pain or killing frenzy stops for them. At the end of the day, most of Belandrus’ army have pulled back into Albion, but almost 5,000 are left for dead upon the Frisian side of the line. As the sun sets, the silhouettes of many riders are seen lined along the ridge within Frisia. The red of the dusk gives them a halo of scarlet and all present can feel the menace from them. Although they are almost a mile away, all clearly hear the words of the riders:

“These lands are to be cleansed. The land is for those who deserve it, the Humans. Death to all others. So is the Word, So is the Law. So sayeth The Inquisition.”

791-793AC

The Frisian Inquisition carry on uniting the Humans of Frisia into a fanatical populace, who will destroy all non-human peoples on sight. All units which try to infiltrate the border meet with the same ‘magical’ barrier, which turns any who pass through in to Frisia insane with either pain or killing frenzy. When magical protection are used to get across the border, once the magic stops the same effects occur when within five miles of the Frisian border. A small band of Aberddu Adventurers manage to penetrate 12 miles into Frisia, using various magics and the party consisting of Pureblood Humans. What they find is a populace who are under the same ‘spell’ as the rest of the land. They are all fanatical about their hatred of non-humans and all see The Inquisition as the ones to lead the Human races to rule the Lands. The party find a small band of elves, which are trying to find some way out of Frisia, but the magical barrier even extends out to sea five miles. The party give their magical protection to the elves to escape and then try to leave themselves – fortunately they do not go with the elves as they are all affected by the Barrier and would surely have killed the elves if they had been together.

795AC

All the lands which border Frisia decree that non-shall enter Frisia (even if they could get past the Barrier) and a five mile band of land next to the border is cleared of all settlements and declared a ‘dead mans area’. There are few complaints as most peoples had already left the area due to bad dreams and the fear of attack by Frisia.

800AC

824AC

Edwin Greentrousers (of the AAG) is brought up on charges of kidnapping the maiden Ellerin from her betrothed Guy, The Red Dragon of Linfield. Edwin claims to have been rescuing Ellerin to take her back to her father’s home. Gerdin of Hedgelock, Ellerin’s father, is found guilty of deceit. He had hired Edwin to ‘rescue’ Ellerin from,”…the ferocious dragon who would ravage her…”, after he had in fact received a sizeable dowry from Guy for his betrothal to Ellerin.

852AC

Frisian army attacks the Dwarven Realms and try to slaughter all the Dwarves. The Dwarves fight them back to the Frisian border, and then erect catapults to fling the Frisian dead back across the border at the Frisians. Dwarves erect a pit and a wall along their sections of the border. As with all the lands that border Frisia, the Dwarves still receive attacks from the Frisian Fanatics over the following years.

897AC

AAG celebrate their quad-centenary in fine fashion. Two minor demons are released from artifacts stolen whilst the Adventurers were under “possession” and “made to loot the Temple” in the middle kingdom of Alendin. The local Dwarf community threaten to destroy the whole of Abberddu if the Sword of Thorik – a magical undead slaying sword – is not returned to them. ‘Fortunatly’ members of the AAG ’find’ it for them. Apparently, the Dwarves had lost it down the back of a sofa they had thrown out, and one of the AAG picked it up cheap from a rag-and-bone man. Also, the AAG are threatened with the loss of Guild status (again), after they have a four day party which ends in the whole guild storming the Chapter-house of the Order of Ecstasy, demanding to be taken into the order. The Order gladly accept them, but after twelve hours the majority of the AAG flee from grounds in terror. In their terror they charge through the gardens of several merchants homes and straight into the nearest tavern, which they proceed to drink dry. When the Militia arrive to inquire about the vandals who wrecked the gardens, the AAG starts a ‘playful tussle’, which results in four members of the Militia being unable to walk without a limp for six months and two more singing soprano for several days afterwards. Ironically, not a single member of the AAG is injured, as they left the tavern by the side window after ‘inciting’ the ‘tussle’. To avoid losing guild status the AAG pay the Militia and merchants compensation. The same week the Order of Ecstasy ‘lose’ several gemstones froma number of their artifacts. Their only comment is, “…We hope that those who took them are coming closer to achieving personal ecstasy in the act. For from this we will one day achieve Universal Ecstasy…”. Four members of the AAG never leave the Chapter-house and ‘come’ closer to Universal Ecstasy.

900AC

934AC

Carius Ash, the Cloud Elf Shaman, is born. Apparently his first words are ‘Marmalade’ and ‘Elixir of Life’. He builds his first gadget aged four months, it’s a rattle which floats in the air by itself and hums.

956AC

The Mage’s Guild discover that the Frisian Barrier is becoming weaker and the area effect is lessened to only one mile. The actual effect at the border itself is also lessened, to blinding pain for non-humans and increased aggression in humans. Both effects though are controlable with extreme concentration and determination, but if a mixed party try to cross then the slightest thing may throw the humans into frenzy against the non-humans. This allows the first large skirmishing parties to cross the border and return some of the attacks that the Frisians had dealt out since the rise of the Inquisition. The Frisians increase the number of Border patrols.

978AC

Several villages are destroyed by undead warriors led by a powerful Necromancer, called Morguelinon. After many unsuccesful attempts to capture him, the attacks stop and he is not seen again for over a hundred years.

999AC

Lord Richard Compton is born. He will later grow up to become one of the most powerful Frysian coercers and necromancer. His official marriage produces three sons, Simon, Theodore and Silas. In addition, he developed a fetish for non-pureblood mates, and unions with three non-purebloods produced his daughters, Cassandra, Celeste and Charlotte. His last act upon dieing was to banish his own soul to the Demon Plane. Here he challenged the Demon Lord, Demokon, to a duel for the possession of their souls. By cheating he manages to win the duel and so takes over Demokon’s body and inherits all of Demokon’s powers and titles. Hence he becomes a Demon Lord.

December

The known world celebrates the start of the new millenium, this includes that AAG being invited to attend the Royal Celebrations in the Summer Palace of Aberddu. Upon arriving they are all led into a large hall, laid out with vasts amount of food and drink, but oddly no furnishings on the walls bar the most basic to keep out the cold and the cutlery is all plain wood. The doors are closed after the Adventurers enter and then barred from the outside. Upon the table is a message saying, congratulations upon the new millenia and the ‘private banquet’ is to ensure that everyone else in the known world has a good new year celebration.

1000AC

1000AC

The AAG are finally let out after six days. They go on a pub-crawl of every pub in Aberddu. After storming a warehouse full of fleeces – believing it to be the local garrison – they go home to sleep it off. Several fleecesare unaccounted for. Kral the Tartar is not seen for several days and then appears wearing a big grin and muttering inane comments about his new loves.

1012AC

“Year of the Great Drought”. Albion and nearby countries suffer the hottest and longest heat wave ever recorded. Even the River Ddu runs dry in places and becomes unnavigable for any large vessels five miles upstream of Aberddu. Famine and disease spread across the lands.

1013AC

The Great Drought is brought to an end after the Mages Guild hold a Ritual involving the Evokers of many different lands across the world. Finally, after centuries of distrust, Evokers begin to become acceptable and can start to openly practice again in the majority of major cities. Although, the distrust of Evokers magics still remains in many places.

1095AC

The Demon Lord Compton manages to capture and murder his daughters Celeste the necromancer, and Cassandra an Evoker and makes them into his concubines.

1096AC

The Demon Lord Compton tries for his other daughter Charlotte, who is a coercer and more commonly known as Lady Melksham of Aberddu.

1096AC

1097AC

The Frysian border is magicaly reinforced and manifests as an effect that makes Purebloods attack non-purebloods, and causes non-purewbloods intense pain. Aberddu is terrorised by the Chaos elemental.

1098AC

Mount Fujisawa errupted and devastated Nippon.

End of an era of terror

The Notorious and powerful Assasins Guild of Aberddu was destroyed in a weekend of blood and death.

1099AC

Night Terrors

For several weeks, the inhabitants of Abberddu are plagued by nightmares. These seems to have been caused after several adventurers had inadvently killed Dream. This situation is quickly resolved.

The Battle of Pass fort.

Frysian forces backed by Salamander Tartars launced an invasion attempt at Aberddu, seeking to first overwhealm the Now unarmed and under manned Citadel of Pass Fort.

Despite treachery from Duke Leapard the CIC of Pass Fort and overwhealming odds, the Aberddu Adventures Guild and Aberddu Militia were able to hold the Pass, at great cost to both sides.

1100AC

1100AC

Summer

The Expected invasion of the Middle Kingdoms by Salamander was delayed when their first wave of forces were destroyed at the origional border of Tartaria. All that remained was a blasted tower and a large number of petrified Tartars.

1101AC

The Battle of Haven

Tartarian forces invade the Middle Kingdoms and ley seige to the Centraly placed Kingdom of Haven, The Small city is used as a focal point to try and halt the tartarian advance by other regional forces and the AAG.

Politics are futher muddied by the intervention of Deep Nachwertan forces , who appear to have sided with the Aliance (Frysia, Tartaria and Nippon).

Two of the Giant Dragon ships of Hasselt dock in Aberddu, these vessles are the largest floating ships in service, each styled to look like a huge Dragon.

1102AC

Death of a Kraken

In the January/Febuary of this year the Sea God Temple went into mourning for several weeks after the body of a Kraken is washed up on the Aberddu coast. It shows signs of a violent death with both claw marks and burns covering its body.

The Fall of Salamander.

After a bitter season of war the Western forces launched a final and desperate attack on Tartarian forces. This attack was designed to provide an opening for AAG forces to strike deep behind Tartarian lines and destroy Salamander and Flamehair in person before they could become to powerful to defeat.

The Plan was a success and the Tartar forces routed once the influence of Salamander was gone.

But the victory was costly and many AAG members were lost, their names to be remembered with all those who fell fighting to hold back the tides of Tartars.

With Salamander defeated a new era of politics arose in the Middle Kingdoms, several Kingdoms had taken advantage of the chaos to consolidate their territories, and the Eastern Regions were claimed by a number of Tartarian Tribes who refused to leave.

1103AC

The Reckoning

The Frysian government announced the building of a monument to peace.

Agents from Aberddu identified the Peace monument as a cover for the construction of a permenant portal to the Pit. Moving across the boarder in secrecy the Aberddu Adventurers Guild gathered in a hunting lodge just outside freetown and sought to destroy the Pit Gate in two ways, One group attacking the physical structure and the other moving into the Pit and destroying it from that side. After losing many people in the attacks the gate fell and the guild fled back to Aberddu where their brave actions was portrayed by Frysian sympathisers as an attack on the principals of frysia itself.

1104AC

The snow globe which contains the Port Sullion pit gateway is stolen from the safe of the Aberddu Adventurers Guild, and is broken over the Plains of Blood.
